Cassandra Walton
Facilitator
Cassandra Walton is an Australian I-Kiribati education practitioner and founder of Real Stuff Matters (RSM Pacific), with more than 15 years' experience working across schools, communities and education systems throughout Australia and the Pacific. She currently works as an Education Consultant with the World Bank and is widely recognised for her work in culturally responsive pedagogy, teacher development and Pacific education systems. This interactive workshop will challenge participants to critically examine the subtle deficit narratives that can shape expectations of Pasifika learners and explore how culturally grounded, relational approaches can create environments where learners thrive. Participants will engage in reflection, discussion, case studies and practical application activities that can be applied within their own educational contexts
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This workshop challenges educators to critically examine how expectations are formed, where they may be unintentionally lowered, and how relational practice can be used to support excellence rather than reinforce limitations. Grounded in Pacific values and a strengths-based lens, the session moves beyond awareness into practical application — ensuring participants leave with clear, actionable strategies for their own context. The workshop brings together educators from school and higher education settings, recognising the interconnected nature of Pasifika learner experiences across the education continuum.

- Strengthen culturally responsive and strengths-based practice.
- Explore strategies for establishing high-expectation learning environments.
- Understand the role of belonging, trust and relationships in learner success.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
This workshop aligns with a range of focus areas within the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), including culturally responsive practice, student engagement, effective communication, professional learning and community partnerships. Following the session you will receive a certificate of participation. APEN membership is open to all educators. To access member pricing, join or renew your membership before registering.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
This is a live, facilitated session delivered online and in person. Registration is required to secure your place. Session dates, times, and locations will be confirmed and communicated ahead of each quarter. Group bookings are welcome — contact APEN directly to discuss group registration options.
PRICE OPTIONS
Professional development sessions are open to all educators, with pricing designed to reflect our commitment to access and equity across the Pasifika education community.
Sessions are priced at $40 for APEN members and $80 for non-members. A student rate of $10 applies for those in initial teacher education or postgraduate study. Educators based in the Pacific Islands attend complimentary, in recognition of APEN's regional connections and our shared purpose across the Pacific.

APEN MEMBERSHIP
APEN is introducing a formal membership model to support the organisation's long-term growth and sustainability. Membership enables APEN to deliver professional learning, strengthen advocacy for Pasifika education, and invest in resources and networks that serve our community.
Existing APEN members retain full benefits until 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, all memberships will renew under the new structure.
