Service Description

This workshop challenges educators to critically examine how expectations are formed, where they may be unintentionally lowered, and how relational practice can be used to support excellence rather than reinforce limitations. Grounded in Pacific values and a strengths-based lens, the session moves beyond awareness into practical application — ensuring participants leave with clear, actionable strategies for their own context. The workshop brings together educators from school and higher education settings, recognising the interconnected nature of Pasifika learner experiences across the education continuum. LEARNING OUTCOMES Participants will: - Identify and interrupt deficit narratives in educational settings. - Strengthen culturally responsive and strengths-based practice. - Explore strategies for establishing high-expectation learning environments. - Understand the role of belonging, trust and relationships in learner success. - Develop practical approaches that support engagement, achievement and wellbeing for Pasifika learners. WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE? - Teachers (Primary and Secondary) - University academics - Professional staff (student engagement, outreach, equity and student support) - Educational leaders - Community engagement practitioners - Anyone working alongside Pasifika learners and communities PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS This workshop aligns with a range of focus areas within the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), including culturally responsive practice, student engagement, effective communication, professional learning and community partnerships. Following the session you will receive a certificate of participation. APEN membership is open to all educators. To access member pricing, join or renew your membership before registering. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW? This is a live, facilitated session delivered online and in person. Registration is required to secure your place. Session dates, times, and locations will be confirmed and communicated ahead of each quarter. Group bookings are welcome — contact APEN directly to discuss group registration options.
